Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• Door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has slipped its drum groove or frayed enough to stretch unevenly. The remaining cable carries the full load, which accelerates wear on the torsion spring and opener rail.
• Grinding or popping from the end of the torsion tube. The drum bore has wallowed out against the shaft, or rust has flaked into the cable grooves. In Fulshear, we see this more often on homes within two miles of the Brazos River floodplain where morning condensation lingers.
• Cable unwinds from the drum in a loose loop. The set screws have backed off, or the drum’s keyway has stripped. Either way, the door is no longer coupled to the spring system and can drop freely if the opener arm gives way.
• Visible rust, kinking, or broken strands on the cable. A single broken wire is a warning; six or more means the cable is living on borrowed time. Texas temperature swings from 40°F winter mornings to 95°F afternoons harden the steel faster than in milder climates.
• Door rises six inches then stops, or opener strains and reverses. The cable has jumped the drum and jammed against the end bearing plate. Running the opener repeatedly in this state will strip the opener gear or snap the trolley arm.

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is a hard line.

You can safely inspect: look for rust, kinking, or a cable off its drum. You can check whether the door is level when closed. You can pull the red emergency release handle and test whether the door moves smoothly by hand - if it binds or drops hard, the cable-drum system is suspect.

What you should not do: unwind a torsion spring to free a bound cable, loosen drum set screws while the spring is loaded, or cut a cable that is still under tension. The spring on a standard double-wide door stores enough force to cause serious injury or worse.
