To identify yours, check the white label on the opener rail or the sticker inside the light cover for the model prefix: IS, PMX, or GPS indicate screw-drive lineage; 2022, 2024, or 3053 indicate chain or belt units. The drum itself will have a part number cast or stamped into the hub face, usually starting with 36764 or 38426. We stock both OEM Genie drums and the DURA-LIFT aftermarket equivalents that meet the same torque specs. • The door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has slipped or frayed, so that side of the door loses lift support while the other side carries the full load. • A grinding or clicking sound from the opener head. The drum has developed flat spots or the cable is winding unevenly, causing the motor to fight itself. On Genie screw-drive units, this sound is distinct: a rhythmic clack rather than a steady hum.
• Visible rust, kinking, or broken strands on the cable. Aircraft cable is strong in tension but weak in bending fatigue. Once you see three or more broken strands in a six-inch section, the cable is living on borrowed time, especially with Fulshear’s spring humidity swings.
• The cable has jumped the drum and is bunched at one end. This usually means the drum grooves are worn smooth or the cable tension was set wrong during a previous repair. A jumped cable will not reseat itself and will damage the door sections if operated.
• The door falls hard or fast when disconnected from the opener. The cables and drums are part of your door’s counterbalance system. If they are not holding tension evenly, the full weight of the door shifts to the springs and opener, accelerating wear on both.
